Although the copyright date says 1991, the book was originally a handmade book produced in 1918 by parents Rose and Lionel Page for their daughter Patricia (P.K.) and her cousins. The original verse and water-colour illustrations have been preserved in this charming book.

The book's intent is to offer gentle guidance or values to children in a humorous form. Most verses are accompanied by a water-colour of a beast or a lovable beauty. The children that I read the book to preferred those writings that were accompanied by a picture. They would laugh with delight as soon as they saw the picture and were then eager to hear about that creature.

I was fascinated by the history of the book and I shared this information with the students. They seemed to enjoy knowing the book's background and therefore were intrigued with some of the words and ideas from "long ago."

"Temper" and "Cuddle" are two personal favourites--the wisdom of the words are ageless and the pictures perfectly capture the feelings from the rhymes. Some of the rhymes are much better than others, but this may largely depend on taste.

This is a good book for describing feelings and to share with children during a quiet story hour. This book is definitely a keeper and could be passed from parents to their children for generations.
