Bibliography

A sketchbook was Erica Rutherford's constant companion when she was growing up in England. She spent hours drawing people in pubs and on the underground, and haunting art galleries. Classes in sculpture and painting at the Slade School of Art helped to hone her artistic talent. In England, Rutherford taught art at several universities and colleges, designed sets for a number of films, and, with the actor Peter Sellers, created the puppet characters for the BBC's Goon Show. She lived in South Africa, Spain and the United States before settling finally in Prince Edward Island. Her painting became more decorative and richer in detail after she moved to Canada -- the striking red soil, green hills dotted with farmhouses, and sandy coloured shores of Prince Edward Island would become features of her illustrations. Painted in acrylics, An Island Alphabet (1994), brings together the bright hues and locales of the island with the corresponding letters of the alphabet. Erica Rutherford now divides her time between Prince Edward Island and Toronto working as a painter, printmaker, and writer. Her art can be found in major public collections including New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Arts Council of Great Britain, and the Canada Council Art Bank.
