The National Superhero in Canadian Comic-Book ArtComics and superheroes were made for each other. Since 1941, when original comic books were first published in Canada, Canadian comic artists have been drawn to the portrayal of our own national superheroes. The nine most significant costumed heroes to personify the Canadian spirit have been Nelvana of the Northern Lights, Johnny Canuck, Canada Jack, the Northern Light, Captain Canuck, Northguard, Capitaine Kébec, and two different Captain Canadas. Together with intriguing associates like Kébec (an associate of Captain Canuck, not to be confused with Capitaine Kébec), Beaver Boy, and Fleur de Lys, these superheroes have steadfastly stood on guard for the "True North Strong and Free." While a few of our guardians have been less than serious in their approach to their superhero duties, they all provide insight into our attitudes toward heroism and patriotism. Guardians of the North explores the fascinating careers of these distinctly Canadian heroes and of the largely unsung artists who created them. |
