The Unfair GST (and its Tax-break to Business)
ALEXA McDONOUGH AND CANADA's NDP

Alexa McDonough and Canada's NDP will fight to reduce the GST and to phase it out.

In 1993 Jean Chrétien said the GST would be gone within two years. Four years later, it's still with us. And the Liberal government is determined to blend it with provincial sales taxes across the country.

This will shift another $6 to $7 billion of the tax burden from corporations to people. Families in Atlantic Canada and Quebec are already suffering from this policy.

In 1990, Jean Chrétien said "I am opposed to the GST. I have always been opposed to it, and I will always be opposed to it. It is a tax that is both regressive and discriminatory." -- Globe and Mail, October 29, 1990

The Liberal promise was to scrap the GST abolish it, replace it . Today, their plan is to harmonized it, hide it and hike it.

The Conservative Party:

Canadians will never forget that it was the Conservative government that forced the GST through, even though fewer than ten percent of Canadians supported this new tax. Conservative Senators endorsed the Liberals' harmonized GST.

The Reform Party:

In a report on the GST in 1994, the Reform Party congratulated the Liberals on their attempt o harmonize the GST with provincial sales taxes.

The Reform Party recommended that consumption taxes should be levied on the broadest possible base. This would mean extending the GST to food, medications and nursing home charges.

Alexa McDonough and Canada's NDP will continue to fight the GST and will oppose harmonizing it with provincial sales taxes. They will fight to:
