Carver, sculptor, painter, and installation artist, Joe Tehawehron David has  actively engaged in the struggle for Native rights, particularly land rights. During the Crisis of 1990 (Oka) he fought to resist the further encroachment of  non-Natives onto remaining Mohawk territory. As well as participating in the major exhibition INDIGENA at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in 1992, David also wrote the moving poem which prefaces its catalogue.
