Special Characteristics: These grasshoppers have the pronotum extended backwards over the abdomen forming a long narrow projection. They are dull brown or gray. The wings are hidden under the pronotum but are absent in some species.

Comments: Most species are found on the ground, especially in damp muddy places near water. They feed on small fragments of vegetation and microscopic algae.
