POLITICAL ACTION

In recognition of the need for independent political
action, Canadian working people have joined others with
similar aspirations to build a political party that
speaks to our needs and goals.

This party is the New Democratic Party of Canada.

Acting politically involves more than waiting for the next election and casting a ballot every few years. It means educating ourselves and working to educate others. It means orgainzing around particular issues and developing the ties to groups outside the labour movement who share our basic objectives. It means thinking about, and debating, what kind of society we want to eventually build and how we can get there.

And it means workers joining together to make a commitment to build and strengthen a common political party, one that articulates our needs and dreams.

In emphasizing political action, it is important
to keep remembering that it is a complement, not
a substitute, for strong unions. Unions not only
represent their members, but act as a training ground
where workers learn the skills to change things
and, more fundamentally, develop the
confidence that change is in fact possible.
Without strong unions, political action
has no foundation.
