After receiving a local education, A.A. Macdonald went on to become a merchant and ship owner in his native province of P.E.I..

In 1854 he was elected into the Island's provincial Assembly in which he served until 1858. In 1863 he was sent to the newly created Canadian Legislative Council and in this regard participated in the Charlottetown Conference. At only 35 he was the youngest delegate at the conference.
