Calreton University

Introduction

Carleton University is a place as well as an institution. Located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, this place is a second home to many thousands of students and staff. It is part of Canada's capital. It is the multiple collections of buildings, paths, trees, rocks and fauna which form the backdrop for academic and social life here. It is also an ever-changing array of mental images of the immediate environment held by each student and member of the staff.

This collection of cartographic and photographic images provide a visual sketch of the evolution of what is now Carleton University's campus. Though the institution celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 1992, the site has only been used by Carleton University for 40 years.

Little has been published about the history of Carleton's present campus. Less information was previously available on the site's history prior to the mid-1950s when the first three educational buildings were built around an open quadrangle looking northeast toward Parliament Hill.
