Helmcken Christmas
A Christmas program at Helmcken house was created, inspired by the descriptions of the Christmas celebrations of the Helmcken family in the past. Usually children from schools are joined by an interpreter and begin by entering the parlour. They are treated like guests at the house, and are taught with the aid of historical photographs who their hosts would have been. Sometimes there are actual family members present.
Food was an important part of the celebration, so there is much to experience in the kitchen. The making of warm apple cider and Christmas pudding are explained.
The house is decorated in the old style, which always includes a tree covered with ornaments. Included are wrapped gifts and a centrepiece on the table, and there is always, somewhere, some mistletoe.
