How Old Is The Canadian Army?

The Canadian Army is one of the oldest institutions in the country. It has a long and honourable history, but it was known as the Canadian Army for a period of only 28 years - from 1940 to 1968, it has been part of the Canadian Armed Forces.

The Canadian Militia consisted originally of volunteers and conscripts who fought alongside the British regulars in the War of 1812 and the Rebellion of 1837. The Hilitia Act of 1846 recognized the volunteer principle. The first permanent active units date from 1871. The Canadian Militia serving during the Fenian Raids (1866-70), in the Red River Rebellion of 1870, and the North West Rebellion of 1885-86. Over 7,000 members served in the South African War (1899-1901). The Canadian Expeditionary Force fought in World War I, and the Canadian Army fought in World War II. The infantry brigade group saw service in Korea i 1950-53. The Canadian Army has provided personnel for United Nations Peacekeeping tasks since 1954.
