Step 1: Drawing the Plans

To begin the construction of a neon sign, a full size drawing must be made of the design. The drawing, like the one here for Southgate Cleaners, contains the complete specifications, including the diameter of tubing, its colour, the type of coating inside the tube, gas to be used and wiring and mounting instructions.
This drawing is transferred, so that it appears in reverse, on to an asbestos sheet so the glass blower can lay his work face down on the pattern to check it.
