AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH  AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH (Toronto, Ontario)

The AME church was founded in 1816 in Philadelphia by Richard Allen after he protested the treatment of African parishioners in the mainstream church; he became the Bishop of the AME.

This church today is situated on the oldest plot of land continuously owned by African Americans in the United States

Black loyalist freedom seekers, free Blacks and other waves of African immigration to Canada founded religious familiar to them and established AME churches here

The AME church in Toronto was situated on a number of different locations, but was the longest at 21 Soho Street during a time of growth and the Black renaissance

The AME church gave rise to the establishment of the British Methodist Episcopal Church in Canada in 1856. The BME continues to be African- Canadian owned and operated
