PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES CHANGES IN THE SENIOR RANKS OF THE PUBLIC SERVICE

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the following changes in the Public Service:

Carole Swan, currently Associate Secretary of the Treasury Board, becomes Associate Deputy Minister of Industry Canada. Ms. Swan began her career in 1975 as a Research Economist with the Manitoba Economic Development Advisory Board. She joined the federal Public Service in 1978. Her past experience includes Senior Policy Analyst, Regional Industrial Expansion Canada; Director General, Corporate Services, Office of Privatization and Regulatory Affairs; and Assistant Secretary, Economic Sector, Treasury Board Secretariat.

Ruth Dantzer, currently Associate Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, becomes Associate Secretary of the Treasury Board. Prior to assuming her current position, Ms. Dantzer served as Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet, Social Development Policy, Privy Council Office. She previously held a number of positions with the Department of Finance, including Director, Sales Tax Policy, Tax Policy Branch. She joined the Public Service as a Manager with the Department of National Health and Welfare. She began her career working with First Nations in Northern Saskatchewan as an Economic Development Officer.

Jean-Claude Bouchard, currently Assistant Deputy Minister, Operations Sector, Industry Canada, becomes Associate Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. Mr. Bouchard began his Public Service career in 1971. His experience includes such positions as Deputy Secretary, Human Resources Policy, Treasury Board Secretariat and Assistant Deputy Minister, Human Resources Services, Human Resources Development Canada. From September 1997 to May 2000, Mr. Bouchard held the position of Vice-President with the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association Inc.
