Metal revisited

These days, the most common materials are becoming highly sought-after commodities. The recycling of metals such as copper, nickel and zinc is booming in Canada. Since these metals are highly re-usable, they are the most recycled of all materials.

Canada's metal-recycling industry comprises more than 1,000 companies and employs more than 15,000 people. Spread over virtually all regions of the country, the metal recycling sector salvages an estimated 10 million tonnes of metal each year, valued at roughly $3 billion. Canadian trade in recycled metals is also impressive: more than 90% is conducted with the United States, but Canada also trades recycled metals with more than 100 other countries.

Recycling reduces the demand placed on virgin resources, increases energy conservation and makes more efficient use of Canada's metal resources.
