Message from the Independent Investigator

In January 2009, I was appointed to conduct an investigation into the August 2008 Listeriosis outbreak that centered on meat products produced by Maple Leaf Foods. This tragic event, which would eventually cost the lives of 22 Canadians, needed to be examined carefully so that the lessons learned could help ensure that similar events never happen again.

Ensuring the safety of our food supply is one of the government's most important responsibilities. As the Independent Investigator, I felt a strong obligation to find out the facts and make recommendations that would help protect the health of Canadians.

On July 20, 2009, I submitted my report to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

Sheila Weatherill, Independent Investigator
