Copyright

Copyright legislation is fundamental to the delivery of services and operations in Canadian libraries. Bill C-60 in 1988 and more recently, the proposed Bill C-32 in 1996, have fundamentally revised and modernized Canadian copyright legislation. A further phase of copyright legislative amendments is envisaged to address the challenges posed by copyright in an electronic environment.

In 1995, the National Library responded to the draft "Report on Copyright and the Information Highway" which explored some of the issues and made recommendations to the Government of Canada concerning copyright and electronic publishing. More recently, Canadian library associations and the National Library have submitted briefs and made presentations on Bill C-32 to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage.
