The Red River Expedition at Kakabeka Falls, Ontario, 1877, by Frances Anne Hopkins

This painting shows some of Colonel G. J. Wolseley's troops portaging during the Red River Expedition of 1870.

After serving in the British army in various parts of the Empire, Colonel Wolseley was sent to Canada in 1861 and became quartermaster general in 1865. He commanded the Red River Expedition during the Métis uprising of 1870.

Frances Anne Hopkins (1838-1919) married E. M. Hopkins, secretary to the Superintendent General of the Hudson's Bay Company. She often accompanied her husband and the Superintendent during their inspection tours of the Company's outposts.
