Kimiko Okano Murakami, 1990, by Barbara Woodley

Kimiko Okano Murakami (born 1904) was one of the 22,000 Japanese Canadians interned by the Canadian government during the Second World War. She was taken away from her husband, and her family's 42-hectare property on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, was confiscated.

In 1989, Barbara Woodley began to photograph outstanding Canadian women. Her three-year project resulted in an exhibition titled Portraits: Canadian Women in Focus. With the support of Labatt Breweries of Canada, the National Archives acquired a complete series of all the portraits in the exhibition.
