What Do Scientists Do? has an admirable agenda. It promotes the variety of scientific fields available as career choices for young people while it stresses that these fields are open to women. This tape contains four programs, each one featuring a different woman scientist. The series was produced for the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology.

The framework of these programs is a class of appealing students doing research projects on scientists. We see the young researchers as they go out in groups to interview the scientists and we also see them presenting reports to their class. The women interviewed are a population ecologist, a hydrologist, an engineer and a geologist. In each program the students are involved in some part of the scientist's work. The performers, both young and adult, act naturally, and, except for some obnoxious theme music played on a synthesizer, the production quality is good.

This educational television product is definitely curriculum support material. The video comes with a sixteen-page teacher's guide with background information and specific follow-up activities that would be useful in the classroom. School and curriculum libraries looking for career choice materials will be interested in this video. Public libraries will not want What Do Scientists Do? unless they have a large number of schools using their collection.
