CASSANDRA'S DRIFTWOOD
Budge Wilson
Volume 22 Number 4
In 1993, Bridge Wilson won the Ann Connor Brimer Award for children's literature. She has also won the CBC Literary Competition, the Dartmouth Book Award and the Canadian Library Association Young Adult Book Award. Her books have been picked for the "Our Choice" selections from the Canadian Children's Book Centre. In Cassandra's Driftwood, Wilson tells the story of a girl and the things she fears most. Set in a beautiful fishing village in Nova Scotia, the tale reveals Cassandra's wonderful imagination. It shows how her imagination helps her to overcome her shyness, which made her feel "as though she were trapped in a box with her shyness sitting on the lid." This fast-paced, exciting story will encourage even reluctant readers to become involved in the life of Cassandra. An excellent beginning chapter book for grades 2 to 4, Cassandra's Driftwood will be a special treat for the shy kids. Terry Roscoe's detailed black-and-white drawings capture the moods and settings of this wonderful tale. Highly recommended for classrooms and libraries.
