CITY PICTURES
Shirlee Smith Matheson
Volume 22 Number 4
Matheson's new book, City Pictures, continues Sherri Farquhar's story. In City Pictures Sherri and her family move again, this time to Calgary. It is the first time since she was four years old that Sherri has lived in a city and, at thirteen, she is eager to fit in. Sherri meets her next-door neighbour, Samantha Locke, who is fourteen and, as far as Sherri is concerned, absolutely perfect. Matheson's story is a classic tale of peer pressure with Sherri being willing to do anything to keep Samantha's friendship. This is an excellent read, with characters you care about from page 1. Readers already familiar with Sherri and her family from Prairie Pictures will enjoy reading more about her in City Pictures. Those who have not read Prairie Pictures will enjoy meeting Sherri and her family for the first time. The book is well written with references to up-to-date matters of interest to pre-teens. Highly recommended. Grades 4 to 6 / Ages 9 to 11 Michele F. Kallio is a former teacher and librarian in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick |
