Introduction

NOTE: The bibliography is divided into two sections: (1) archival records consisting of photographers' papers (correspondence, diaries and notebooks); and (2) publications, including academic disserations/theses, electronic publications and Web sites.  Some material listed here is not referred to in the directory.

Canadian books and periodicals, including business directories, published in the 19th century and up to 1920, may be available on microfiche as part of the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions (CIHM; opens new browser window) Early Canadiana Research Collection at major research libraries. Links to Early Canadiana Online will be found within each published title which also exist in electronic form; I have referred to these electronic titles, created from the CIHM microfiche negatives, as a Digital Reprint. The Early Canadiana Online Digital Reprint links will also open a new browser window.

The Making of America Digital Library also contains electronic versions of published works relating to the United States and aspects of North American history from 1865 to 1925. Links to these Digital Reprints will also open a new browser window.

Besides the CIHM and Digital Reprint links, hardcopy title and hardcopy reprint links will take you to a product page on Amazon.com where you can find further information on the title and its availability. These links will open a new browser window.
