WORK INTERVAL:
1863 10-1866 08.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Gentile
arrived in Victoria from San Francisco in September 1862 and opened a "fancy
goods" store. The following August he was advertising to buy "photographic
fixings" and by October 1863 had opened a portrait studio in conjunction with
his store. He then sold the store in February 1864 and attempted to also sell
the photo gallery; he made a second attempt in March 1865. Unsuccessful in his
intention to dispose of the photo business, he carried on and began a series of
landscape views throughout the known portions of the Colonies of Vancouver
Island and British Columbia.
One of his most important photographic
ventures was in August and September 1865 when he accompanied Governor
Frederick Seymour's party to the Cariboo country. Gentile also photographed the
Alberni area in 1864, the Leech River and Sooke district in 1864 during the
height of the gold rush and parts of Washington Territory in 1866.
When he
departed BC in September 1866 he left Noah Shakespeare in charge of the
gallery that he had only opened in May of that year. Gentile never returned and
was later reported to be in San Francisco in 1867, in the U.S. Southwest in
1868 and was in Chicago by the late 1870s.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: The eldest child
of William John Gould (1830, London, England-1896, Toronto, ON), W.J. Gould the
son married on May 25, 1876 in Owen Sound, ON, Sarah Ann McGregor (1852, Owen
Sound, ON-1892 or 1894). The couple had three children, two of whom were born
in Owen Sound, and the last in Rochester, New York, in 1882. Gould operated as
an itinerant photographer, possibly following his wife's death, out of several
different Prairie locations between 1892 and 1899 by which time he had
remarried and moved to Golden, BC.
Operating out of a tent in Moose Jaw, SK,
in June-July 1893, Gould's ad (Moose Jaw Times, June 16, 1893) claimed
"twenty-seven years experience in the best studios in Canada and United
States." If this statement is true, it means he likely apprenticed as a
photographic assistant at age 12 (1866). Gould visited Revelstoke in August
1894 where he worked out of a tent near the bakery. Moving his headquarters to
Regina in 1895, he visited or worked out of Vernon in 1897. Gould married Mary
Etta Rennie (1874-1941, Prince Albert, SK) on August 10, 1898 in Indian Head,
SK, and they had six children in Golden.
According to a biographical account
by a granddaughter, Gould operated out of a two-story building later known as
Marr's Drugstore.
