As a United States Navy lieutenant stationed in Alaska between 18__ and ____ he developed an interest in the Native peoples with whom he came into contact. Emmons photographed primarily among the Tahltan and Tlingit peoples of Alaska and BC.
Emmons published widely in his lifetime. Some of his writings on the Tlingit peoples was posthumously published and contains examples of his photography.
