BIOGRAPHY: Oliver began his photographic career with Calgary photographer Frederick B. Cooper, then worked for about a year as a newspaper photographer for the Morning Albertan (1911-1912), following which he opened his first studio in the basement of a house he lived in at 314 - 7th Avenue East. He later landed work with the Calgary Herald and was much in demand as an outdoor photographer. W.J. Oliver took up cinematography during the late 1910s. He was associated with Fox Movietone News and also produced an impressive series of films for the federal Parks Branch in the 1920s and 1930s. Jameson's biography thoroughly documents his varied career.
