Trained in photography in St. Paul in 1923 (his aunt Charisa Bass was a

shop in Atlin due to its reputation as "Canada's little Switzerland." His first
marriage after the birth of one son ended in divorce in the late 1920s. He
remarried Helen Emelyn Hickey of Portland, OR, and they moved to Jasper, AB,
but kept the Atlin studio open during the summer. They retired to Santa Barbara
after selling the Jasper business to Tom Johnston of Saskatoon, SK.

Teit, James Alexander (1864 __ __, Shetland Islands-1922 __
__, ___________).
Spences Bridge/late 1890s-1922.
Ethnolologist
(amateur).
Emigrated from Scotland in 1883, he settled at Spences
Bridge, married a Thompson (Nlaka'pamux) woman in 1892 and took up photography
as an amateur in the late 1890s. He assisted ethnographer Franz Boas (see
Camera Workers, vol. 1) in 1894 at Spences Bridge and around 1911 helped
photographer V.V. Vinson photograph the Nlaka'pamux. The bulk of his
work was recorded on behalf of the Geological Survey of Canada for whom he
collected ethnographic information between 1911 until his death. Teit also
assisted Natives with lands claim and self-government issues by organizing and
helping managing Native rights associations. Teit's photographs are an
invaluable visual record of Interior Salish Natives and their culture.

Although born in
England, Thomson grew up in Australia where he apprenticed with the Victoria
State Railway. Introduced to photography during this period, he bought a camera
to take along on his various trips around the country. He immigrated to Canada
in 1910 and began working for the CPR. Another worker recommended he purchase
an Empire State View Camera which used 8 x 10 inch negatives. At this point
Thomson turned professional, using his boarding house, "The Australia," as his
business address initially, then out of his own studio. He was actively engaged
in the trade until a month before his death.
Thomson photographed virtually
every aspect of Vancouver, producing about 50,000 images for a variety of
clients, including three Vancouver newspapers. Among his photographic
achievements were the first civilian aerial photographs in Canada in 1919.
Thomson's camera, a Goertz Anschutz folding camera, was acquired by
George Allen (Allen Aerial Photos) who was a friend of his in the 1950s.
