Quality Matters

Evaluation of a rapid test for sprout damage underway

Sprout damage in wheat is a tricky thing to assess. A wheat sample containing a small amount of severely sprouted kernels may have high levels of alpha-amylase, the enzyme that damages bread-making quality. Or it may not.

Facts for Farmers

A grade changes only after the Western Standards Committee has researched, discussed and approved the change, and after the regulations in the Canada Grain Act change. While grades change rarely, standard samples may change slightly each year to reflect the specific environmental conditions of the growing year.

Canadian Grain Commission reviews status of canary seed

The Canadian Grain Commission is asking producers and the grain industry if canary seed should be designated a grain under the Canada Grain Act and Regulations.

Discussion Paper

Should canary seed be designated a grain under the Canada Grain Act?

In order for a crop to be regulated in accordance with the Canada Grain Act, it must be designated as a grain in the Canada Grain Regulations. Currently, 21 grains are so designated. Grains may be added by amending the regulations. The Canadian Grain Commission is requesting that interested parties comment on whether or not canary seed should be so designated.

News Release

Canadian Grain Commission begins consultations on proposed variety eligibility declaration system

The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) invites grain producers and all sectors of the Canadian grain industry to provide input between now and March 31, 2003 on a proposal to modify Canada's grain handling and quality assurance system.

Discussion Paper

A Discussion Paper on the Use of Variety Eligibility Declarations

In 2001, the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) established an advisory committee to consider alternatives to relying on kernel visual distinguishability (KVD) to segregate grain. With this paper, we are broadening the discussion to seek input from all stakeholders. In the Commission's view, the direction we have outlined is the direction we must take if Canada's reputation for grain quality is to be maintained.
