Interviews with
Arviat Elders

Annie Sewoee
AnnieAnnie was born in Ennadai Lake. She came from the Asiarmiut tribe. They call Ennadai Lake Atiqtuniarvik. Annie was raised at Ennadai Lake. She had a brother named Palikssalik. Her grandmother was Qajaijuaq. Her grandfather was Siquaralaaq. Siquaralaaq’s first wife was Hanaaq and his second wife was Ipak. Usutuuq was Siquaralaaq’s older brother. Annie and her family spent their summer and winter’s living in Akuttuniarvit. In their tribe there was Nutaralutjuakut, Aijaakut, Saumikut, Miasaakut, Mikikut, Paugalaatjuakut and her in law’s Nanujuakut.

Annie came to Arviat in 1986. The Police came and moved them to Arviat. She said they were put in planes and taken away to a new land. This happened because their tribe was starving and there were no animals around to hunt. Annie was so used to living in Ennadai Lake that she was afraid they wouldn’t survive without trees for wood, caribou and birds for food, and that the water was bad. After a while she got used to the new land and knew that they could survive.
