Interviews with
Arviat Elders

Job Mukjunik
JobJob was born at Sikuligjuaq. He was raised at Ennadai Lake. His father was Aulatjut and his mother was Utaraaluk. The other families they traveled with were Anowtalik, Aija, Tablu and his in-laws. They spent their summer at Naluit and spent their winters in Imatjuaq.

In 1945 Job and his family often moved back and forth from Ennadai to Arviat. In 1957 they permanently moved to Arviat. Job never thought that his life would change. In the past they had to walk to go hunting, now he hates to walk and he gets sick easily inside the house. Even though living in a tent or an iglu seemed normal in the past, he doesn’t want to go back. He said that living in iglus was a lot of fun. There was one thing that we have to say about his experience. One night, all the men went hunting and all the ladies were left all alone at the camp. When the men came back, they noticed that the ladies were all sitting patiently on top of the tents, waiting all night for the men to come back. They were trapped by wolves. The ladies couldn’t do anything but wait for the men to come back to kill the wolves. Otherwise, Job is a very well known man for survival.
