Anita
was born at Kuutjuaq, near a river at Akutjuaq. She grew up around Arviat,
the home she lives in today. There were only three people in her family.
Her dad’s name was Puuli, and her mom’s name was Aumau. Ahungahungalik,
near Arviat is where she spent both winter and summer. There were other
families she lived with but can’t remember them. Since she was a child,
she always lived around Arviat. Anita never thought her lifestyle would
change, so she never believed in heated housing. She feels that because
she faced a lot of changes, she is used to living in a heated house, and
doesn’t want to go back to living on the land. Anita feels that it’s too
hard living out on the land, because of all the changes that occurred.
“There were no houses for us, there were only houses for the police men,
the church and stores.” Anita seems to have a hard time deciding whether
she would want to go back, it must have been hard, especially moving from
iglus to heated houses.
