History

On August 29, 1952, the City purchased the land situated on the east side of Upper Sherman Ave. between Fennell Ave. and Mohawk Rd., (approximately 35 acres), at $1,150 per acre from Annie L. Smith. Fifteen acres of this property were to be set aside and used as a site for a new Home for the Aged and Infirm, now known as Macassa Lodge. The Provincial Government paid fifty percent of the cost of the purchase of this 15 acre site. In 1955, 16.5 acres were given to the Hamilton Board of Park Management for park purposes. This land was made available to compensate for the loss of the three-acre parcel of land known as Patton Park, which was taken over by the City for the construction of the Jolley Cut Road. The park was named for its location in the Macassa neighbourhood. Macassa is the Indian name for Hamilton Harbour meaning "beautiful water".

Landscaping was done around the Macassa Lodge at the site in June of 1955, and the park was developed in 1959 and 1960. Playground equipment was installed in 1986.

IMAGE In May of 1993, the recommendation to build a new fire station at Macassa Park just barely squeaked by in a 9 - 8 vote at City Council. The total project was to cost $3,245,000. The new station, at 1,900 square meters (21,000 square feet), replaced the Upper Wentworth - Mohawk and Upper Gage - Queensdale stations. On November 29, 1994, Alderman Don Ross used an axe to cut the ribbon that officially opened Hamilton's new fire station.
