On Canada Day, 1984, Shawinigan Park was dedicated to recognize the friendship between the cities of Hamilton and Shawinigan (Quebec), with which Hamilton was twinned in 1954. Part of the park property is leased out to the Hamilton-Wentworth Separate School Board for Saint Vincent de Paul School, with the Board contributing $10,000 for the park. It was developed with play equipment in 1987, the school funds for which were contributed by the Canadian Legion and the City. In 1988, $45,000 was allotted to overhaul the park, including the clearing of a wood lot. Approval for a play structure project for the site was given on May 26, 1992. Phase II of an 8-year development program for the site was okayed by the neighbourhood and was started in 1993. Phase III began in 1994 and is nearing completion.
