Commodore Francis Williams

In September a squadron of five ships, commended by Commodore Francis Williams, appeared before the fort. The garrison still comprised only of 50 men, but the government of de Brouillan, obtained the help of the Captain of the fishing boats and 120 members of their crew. The governor had a redoubt built at the entry to the port. After due notice and an exchange of envoys, Brouillan gave orders to open fire. The besieged, who were short of powder and cannon balls, could only fire 300, but their well-aimed fire seriously damaged the enemy flagship. The attackers weighted- anchor and went to burn the buildings at Point Verts.
