The following is a brief description of the origin of The Order of the Garter. In 1348 while King Edward III was dancing with the Duchess of Salisbuary her garter dropped to the floor. The king noticed the people of the court looking and smiling at each other as he, without embarassment, picked up the garter and handed it to the Duchess. After this occurance the king orginated the "The Order of the Garter."
