Enfant, Ben Wicks «dévorait» les illustrés, influencé par le travail de sa famille dans les bureaux d'un journal de Londres, sa ville natale. Cependant, ce n'est que beaucoup plus tard, après avoir émigré au Canada, que fut lancée sa carrière de caricaturiste. Musicien de l'armée à Calgary, il faisait des recherches à la bibliothèque pour se renseigner sur la caricature lorsqu'il trouva un article énumérant les revues intéressées à acheter des caricatures. Sa carrière pris son envol peu de temps après, lorsque The Saturday Evening Post acheta une de ses caricatures. En 1963, il accepta un poste de caricaturiste affilié au Toronto Telegram. D'aucuns ont dit de ses caricatures qu'elles jettent un regard neuf et spirituel sur le monde, et qu'elles sont le reflet le plus fidèle de la réalité canadienne. Wicks a aussi couvert la guerre du Biafra en qualité de journaliste, animé une émission de télévision pour le réseau anglaise de la SRC et illustré une série de livres pour enfants écrits par sa fille. Les livres de la série Katie and Orbie ont inspiré une série d'émissions d'une demi-heure au réseau public américain PBS. Wicks a aussi publié Cher Canada (1995), un recueil bilingue de lettres et de dessins d'écoliers canadiens, et Né pour lire et écrire (1996), un dépliant sur les plaisirs de la lecture qui fut distribué à près de deux millions d'écoliers. Ben Wicks est Membre de l'Ordre du Canada.
