L'artiste et écrivain James Houston, seul auteur ayant été trois fois lauréat du Book of the Year for Children Award de la Canadian Library Association, a suivi une formation en arts plastiques au Canada, en France et au Japon. À l'âge de 12 ans, dans le cadre d'un cours au Ontario College of Art, il rencontra Arthur Lismer, un des membres du Groupe des Sept. C'est Lismer qui fit découvrir au jeune élève la culture et l'art primitifs qui le fascinent encore aujourd'hui. Houston s'est rendu dans l'Arctique en 1948 et y est resté pour vivre et travailler avec les Inuit jusqu'en 1962. Bien qu'il parle couramment l'inuktitut, ses premières difficultés à maîtriser la langue l'incitèrent à se servir de sa tablette à croquis comme moyen de communication. Il fit plusieurs dessins de ses compagnons, principalement au crayon ou à la plume. Ces dessins devinrent populaires auprès des Inuit qui s'en servaient souvent pour décorer leur demeure. L'artiste en vint à apprécier l'art inuit et fonda la West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative pour promouvoir et commercialiser la sculpture inuit au Canada et à l'étranger. De plus, il initia les artistes inuit à la gravure. En 1962, il s'installa à New York où la rencontre fortuite de Margaret K. McElderry (directrice de la collection de livres pour enfants à la maison d'édition Harcourt) l'incita à écrire et à illustrer son premier livre pour enfants, Tikta'liktak: An Eskimo Legend (1965). Houston préfère le crayon ou l'encre, la gravure sur bois ou à la pointe sèche. La force de son coup de crayon, qui n'a d'égale que la puissance de ses récits, donne au livre une grande qualité visuelle. La collection de la Bibliothèque nationale comprend des croquis, des illustrations au crayon et à l'encre ou au crayon de couleur ainsi que les manuscrits de ses livres pour enfants. James Houston est Membre de l'Ordre du Canada.
