Student Worksheet 4: Revision and Editing

Revision Checklist

When you are finished your first rough draft, use the revision checklist below to measure the quality of your writing.

Content

Yes

No

Have we included everything we want to write about?

Have we put in enough detail to make the story interesting?

Have we taken out everything that is not needed?

Think about the questions a reader might ask us about our story. Have all the questions been answered by the end of the story?

Is everything written as clearly as we want?

Style

Will our opening grab the readers' attention?

Will the readers feel the way we want them to feel?

Have we used the best words to create the effect/mood we want?

Have we checked to make sure we haven't used too many "ands" and "thens"?

Are there places where we could have used direct speech (dialogue)?

Have we used a variety of sentence types?

Does the conclusion finish the story well?

Organization

Are our ideas communicated in a sensible and understandable order?

Have we included things that go together well on one page?

If you answered NO to any of these questions, go back and revise your work.
