Broadside probably referring to the electoral victory of Edward Blake (1833-1912) during the 1882 or 1887 election. Prime minister of Ontario in 1871, Blake was leader of the federal Liberal Party from 1878 to 1887.

The "Reform party" was the Liberal party led by Wilfrid Laurier from 1887. The Liberal party supported free-trade with the United States while the Conservative party favoured protectionism. The latter, led by John A. MacDonald, won the elections in 1882, 1887, and 1891.
