The Identity Variations:
Canadian Fiction and the Search for Identity
The search for identity is a major theme of Canadian literature found in the works of such authors as Margaret Laurence, Joy Kogawa, Clark Blaise, Louis Hémon and Mordecai Richler. It often involves confrontation with an "Other" in the form of another person, nature or a hidden aspect of the self and asks:
- Who are we as individuals?
- Who are we as Canadians?
- Who are we as men and women?
- What are we?
- What does it mean to be human?
- Where do we draw the line between human and machine?
