The Prairie
Our
land
has no bones,
lolling out flaccid
like a deflated anemone,
beaten flat but for tiny floppings,
the sea of the land.
I wish I could watch
the ground buck up
beneath its skin,
not how easily she is furrowed.
Don Schaeffer was born in the Bronx, N.Y. in 1940. He established the
