Nature Loves to Hide

When the sky
cracks open
and falls down,
an eagle will be again
a bird.
Our lawns, the grass.

When the roof crashes in
on our heads,
community will be again
our hands.
People, good animals.

When the divides are broken
and tides are raging,
the law will be again
what blooms.
Our faith will be again
the earth.

When predictions fail
and the future betrays the past,
superstitions like science
will be again
an admirer
of secrets withheld, revealed.

This Morning

The world is full of mind-rotting scenes.
Let’s forget them all
and bring some nutrients into our blood.
Your smile.
The hot food on its way.
Your hands grasping mine under the table.
Your eyes,
brightly squinting newborn morning,
remind me:

The way we woke our parents,
surprised to find them living under those blankets.
Breathing without moving.
Knowing deep within the spark we possess
to alert another life to our own,
to share in the excitement of awareness
that on this morning we’re all alive.
