A Box Of Tea

It hails all the way from China,
hand picked from a mountain high enough
to escape the ravages of pollution.

swathed in red satin,
nestled within a wooden box
of ornate design,
hand painted in strokes
heavy with symbols,
and etched in fine gold lettering

Tucked within the leaves
come warm wishes
for a speedy recovery

Scoop a teaspoon into one cup of boiling water,
strain after five minutes,
stir with a drop of honey, if so desired,
and all my love.

Fickle

Today I love Chaucer
Tomorrow, maybe Keats
But Shelley, always Shelley

Right now, I am loving the tree
outside my window
Because of how it swings and sways,
as though it is dancing with the breeze
Tomorrow, the October Daphne
might have all my affection

In the moment,
I am impassioned for licorice
The beaded kind in the all-sorts bag
I roll them on my tongue until
the candy coating dissolves
Then see how long it takes
to finish off the gummy inside
The next day might bring a fervency for
Bridge mixture – who knows?

But of this I am certain
One thing stands for sure
You—never
You I will not love again.

Hong Kong Suicide

A seventeen year old girl
just killed herself in Hong Kong
because her grandfather released her pet squirrel

Bizarre

I ask a friend, who has been to Hong Kong,
What he makes of this
and he tells me “Despair. It’s so thick there you can cut it with a knife”

but it still makes no sense.
