After The Late Show
The embers of the television
fade to silent green.
Muscles are sore from the evening stretch,
and eyes regret having followed
flickering images on a magic screen.
The dishes call out to be washed.
The shower rains hot, then cold,
then not at all.
It is somehow incomplete,
but the yearning to explore possibilities
is suppressed. It grows late.
The morning comes early.
Teeth must be brushed
and pants folded
and hung on a hanger
and the soul must be
rested and ready
for another day.
