Daughter

it seems inevitable that
she should be here
born into this particular body

a unity spun
from this shared fate
no memory of the blow
yet you stand bound to us
for eternity

as we watch you sleep

My Imprint on the World

small and chubby
they can lift beads and bottles
blades of grass
into their sweet mouths
clumsily, relentlessly
innocent and curious

ten little fingers
beautiful and strong
one day they will stroke a dog
lift a flower
smell its fragrant scent
caress a lover

but for now
one sweet finger
in the mouth
he savors like

cotton candy on a stick
