Fantasies on Earl

Sometimes I rub root beer and vanilla tonics
Into my hair, as if the sweet courtesies
Would make you smile

I linger in white linen skirts
And fancy myself a debutante
On the eve of greatness

The windows shine on keen boulevards
And carriages of grace
And I, adorned, sip on my earl gray tea

And sketch waterfalls and meadows
And well meaning storms

While you, in your gray boots
Make pathways in the poisonous dust
And tip your well-earned hat
At imaginary horseman and
Sword bearing soldiers

There in imaginary fields of glory
Lurking beyond the long broken porches
Of someone else’s yesterday…
