Interstate USA

Gaunt and grimy woeful cow

tied behind a tilted barn,
yellow-legged, knee-deep in mire,
staring with dumb accusation
at the endless traffic flow.

Sullen beast in deep malaise,
cowering under lowering clouds,
there’s omen in your vacant stare
and lassitude that chills my blood.
Is it indictment of the human race,
a portent of disaster?
The truth is everywhere to see:
the sad abuse of those who share
with us the earth; the fouling
of the sanctity of life,
the failure to look beyond profit,
the fury to crush and consume.

We betray a sacred trust,
spit out the herb and fruit
of the tree for meat.
Are we past indifference;
no longer feel, no longer care,
and like the master in his counting house
beyond the barn, lack fear of retribution?
