My Body Overheard

My body overheard
a stranger’s footsteps
or was it that lover I left
long ago, hanging on the
last word I said—scribbled
on a paper napkin.

My body overheard
another body’s quarrel and
thought it was its own, turned on
itself and devoured me whole
on the very bed you laid
down on last night.

In the rafters, where the
bats hang out, my body overheard
a rumor that you were coming back
then reported to my brain but my
brain rejected the idea,
since it insisted it overheard
the opposite.

This argument of sorts continued
until I was on my third day without
sleep
and my body overheard enough crap
to know it wasn’t ever going to be
fine…it was just going to be acceptable.

Julie Ellinger Hunt resides in North West NJ with her two crazy kids and husband (she swears they are part alien). Her first book, Ever Changing, made an excellent beverage coaster. Julie's next collection, In New Jersey, due out this Winter, is rumored to be better than the first. Especially as a plate trivet. Keep up with her publications at jthunt.wordpress.com
