AFTERMATH

I have always carried the possibility within me,
Cruel edged and sharp like a chipped stone
Abrasively hidden within the folds and swathes
Of soft delicate silk.
My love has cradled its rough unkind angles
Limiting the damage as best it could
Supported by faith and the strength of you.
Now in the aftermath of the storm
That snatched the birds from our trees
And wrenched such foundations from under me
I stare in mute incomprehension
At the rags and shreddings
That litter my world
And listen to the silence
Falling towards me down the phone.
You have so much more than me now.
I am dumb in the face of better.
Let me scream at you in silence.
