Antiques and Roses

Weidman would gasp with pleasure
if he could see his roses
pouring down the walls
virgin white
blushing pink
honey yellow

he would now and again
cool his hands
in the half-moon fountain
outside…

but Weidman lies at rest
his house is locked
the shop closed
yet in its window
the Madonna with Child
smiles as serenely as ever
and the Louis Quinze and
the Biedermeier chairs
look tempting enough
to make one wish to enter
and browse through rare books
or admire the cut-glass goblets
perfect for grand-cru Bordeaux
and Burgundy

while his roses
pour down the walls
honey yellow
blushing pink
virgin white
